Imagine a Hebrew School where kids don’t want to miss a day. They come in with a smile and leave humming a Hebrew song. Walking through the halls, you can hear the sounds of lively discussion, of singing, laughter and prayer. Imagine a child who feels the warmth and spirit of Judaism. Imagine the pride of his/her parents.
An exciting and innovative educational program in Richmond Hill / Thornhill. Our School enjoys a well-earned reputation as a trend setter in creative Jewish education for children in Grades 1 through 6.
The JYN Hebrew School has exciting new programs, a dynamic staff and interested students. Our student body is made up of children from various backgrounds and affiliations. Synagogue membership is not required. We encourage you as a parent to get involved, ask questions and keep in touch with our school. Feel free to contact us any time.
Classes are held on Sunday 9:30am – 12:00pm weekly at the JYN Robbins Family Campus.
The goal of our Hebrew School is to provide a high-quality, engaging Jewish education in a fun, positive, and welcoming environment. We want every child to feel excited about being Jewish and proud of who they are. Our dedicated teachers focus on nurturing a love for learning and a love for Judaism. Through creative, hands-on learning, we aim to build a strong foundation of Jewish identity so that every child feels connected to their heritage and understands how Torah values can guide their everyday life.
Drop-off time is from 9:20 to 9:30 AM. Parents are welcome to either pull up and drop off their child or park and walk them inside. Pick-up is at dismissal time, and we ask that parents arrive on time to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal.
We understand that sometimes unexpected situations come up. However, early pick-up is strongly discouraged because it disrupts your child’s learning and the flow of the class. If there is an urgent need, please text Morah Fraida at least ten minutes before arrival, and we will have your child waiting at the door for you.
We kindly ask that all boys come with a kippah as this is part of our school policy. For snack time, we provide biscuits, but if your child prefers to bring something from home it can be a fruit or vegetable. Outside food and drinks are not allowed.
Our rules are designed to create a safe, respectful, and positive environment where every child can learn and have fun. Students are expected to stay in their classroom or use the washroom on the second floor. Wandering around the building is not permitted. A teacher must always be present when students are outside the classroom, including during recess. We also ask students to take care of our building and not write on walls, tables, or furniture. Parents will be responsible for any damage caused. For safety reasons, students may not sit on tables or drag chairs and tables. Only teachers are allowed to move furniture, and table legs must always be locked in place. We also ask that students not touch the blinds in the classrooms.
The safety and well-being of our students is very important to us. Minor injuries like small cuts or bruises will be handled by our staff. If there is any question about the seriousness of an injury or if a child becomes unwell during school, parents will be contacted right away.
A small amount of homework will occasionally be given, especially since we are trying to give your child a proper Jewish education in a very short amount of time. We believe that homework is a valuable tool to help reinforce what was learned in class. We encourage parents to support and supervise their children’s homework to help them succeed.
We kindly ask parents to help teach their children the importance of being on time and attending consistently. We understand that families are busy and weekends can be full of events and trips, but regular attendance is the key to your child’s success at Hebrew School. Children who miss too many classes often fall behind and lose confidence, so your partnership in this is very appreciated.
A $100 deposit is required at the time of registration. This deposit will only be charged once your child is accepted and is non-refundable and non-transferable. All tuition fees must be paid in full by December 31. If you need to cancel your child’s registration, you may receive a 50% refund if you withdraw before November 15, or a 25% refund before December 15. After December 15, no refunds will be given. Please note that refunds are not available for daily or weekly absences, and all cancellations must be submitted by email.
We are so proud of our amazing and dedicated staff. Our teachers love what they do and work hard to make sure each child feels cared for and excited to learn. We understand that Hebrew School is an additional program outside of regular school hours, so we strive to make learning fun, creative, and meaningful. We are especially proud to be the only Hebrew School in the GTA that offers a one-to-four teacher-to-student ratio for Hebrew reading. The results speak for themselves—you will be amazed at how much your child will learn and grow.
We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Fraida Warmflash as our Hebrew School director. Fraida has years of experience in education and community programming. She brings a warm heart, a creative spirit, and a deep passion for teaching. We know she will make a wonderful difference in your child’s Hebrew School experience.
At JYN Hebrew School we recognize that each child is a unique individual with different learning styles and abilities.
Our teachers, trained Judaic teachers, are the true life behind our Hebrew School. They actually live the material that they teach – and there is nothing like a living example.
Our philosophy is that every Jewish child is entitled to a Jewish education. To achieve this goal, we have opened a Hebrew school in Thornhill to bring this opportunity to the children of our community. JYN Hebrew School offers a warm and lively Jewish atmosphere where children can attain a unique and exciting awareness of their Jewish identity.
At JYN Hebrew School we endeavor that our students should…
Several years ago, a young and energetic Chabad Hebrew School Director decided to expand her recreational activities by joining a local Torah Dojo Karate class. Under the tutelage of “Sensei Diane” she began learning the techniques of Karate.
One fine morning it dawned upon her that learning Karate was indeed quite similar to the reading program at the Hebrew School she was running. The parallels were incredible. First, both systems ran once a week, leaving way too much space time from class to class for any substantial progress. Second, at home, few parents were clued in to what the child was learning. Practicing Karate at home, no one would have noticed whether she was practicing a front, side or round-house kick. Similar to the parent who tries to help with her child’s Hebrew reading work but can’t tell a kamatz from a koobotz. And last, there were students of all levels in class at the same time.
With all these similarities, there was just one major difference. In Karate, students were motivated to progress, were practicing for test dates with friends, and graduated from level to level quite quickly. Hebrew reading at the Hebrew School however was looking quite different. Students were learning to read year after year, without too much motivation to progress and failing to read properly by the time they needed to read for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. So what was being done in Karate that could be adapted to the Hebrew School?
When a student steps into a Karate class, it is very clear what level everyone is on. The teacher is a Black Belt. Some students who have been studying for years are Purple or even Brown Belts. Beginners wear White Belts and there is a plethora of other colored belts. It is very clear what one needs to know in order to pass a level and the reward is merely the change in color belt, a change in status. If only there was some way to divide reading into a clear color coded system with levels easily defined and attainable…
A program in which students would be excited about learning to read Hebrew and motivated to advance to the level of the teacher.
